Biodiversity Illustrated: Visual Storytelling for Global Ecosystem Conservation & Public Outreach

Project Overview
Biodiversity Illustrated is a high-profile, cross-border educational initiative designed to combat global ecosystem deterioration and promote localized conservation strategies. Operating within the strategic framework of the European Union’s Biodiversity Strategy 2030, the project aims to bridge the gap between scientific ecological data and public outreach.
Recognizing that traditional scientific reporting can sometimes create barriers to public understanding, the project intentionally leverages strong artistic elements—merging precise scientific illustration, storytelling, and digital media to communicate the urgency of biodiversity protection to a broader audience.
The Creative Directive & Contribution
As a core visual contributor to the project’s main intellectual output—The Biodiversity Illustrated Handbook—the challenge was to translate dense ecological data into captivating, accurate visual assets. The handbook profiles 36 of the world’s critical global ecosystems and biodiversity hotspots. These regions are relatively small in geographical area but host the planet’s highest concentration of endemic and vulnerable species, making them highly fragile to climate change and human impact.
Contributing a series of 9 detailed scientific editorial illustrations, the artwork serves a dual purpose: capturing the distinct, fragile biological traits of these vulnerable environments while functioning as an engaging pedagogical tool to improve the competencies of adult educators and local communities.
An International Alliance
This large-scale project brought together an international network of specialized ecological, cultural, and social organizations across European regions that are uniquely vulnerable to biodiversity loss:
A) Unglingasmiðjur Stígur og Tröð (Iceland): A Reykjavík-based organization focusing on holistic development and community integration.
B) Associação My Madeira Island (Portugal): A non-profit dedicated to the cultural, social, and sustainable development of island ecosystems.
C) Abrazo House (Spain): An educational center for ecological design, sustainability, and permaculture working directly with the restoration of nature.
